With the economy in shambles and the daily headlines constantly publicizing layoffs, cutbacks and downsizing, it may seem strange to find the word “hiring” in your local paper.

But here it is.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which is opening a new thrift store in Long Beach, is hiring for 22 positions. With more than 10 percent of Long Beach out of work, this came as great news for the hundreds who showed up Tuesday, for the first of three days to fill out an application at the store’s new site in Long Beach.
