Nissan Sells Old Headquarters Building

Nissan North America Inc. said it has agreed to sell its former headquarters in Carson to Los Angeles-based Kearny Real Estate Co., which plans to convert the campus into a business park.

The 41-acre site just off of the San Diego (405) Freeway was first put on the market in May after Nissan decided to move its North American headquarters to Tennessee, despite an effort by state and local business development officials to retain the company.

Scott Schumacher of CB Richard Ellis Groups Inc., the Los Angeles real estate firm that handled bids for the property, said that Kearny intends to lease or sell subdivided portions of the site to individual commercial and industrial tenants. The campus is comprised of 14 individual office and industrial buildings amounting to more than 700,000 square feet of space. The terms of the sale to Kearny were not disclosed.

Nissan had occupied the facility for more than 40 years before deciding to relocate its North American headquarters to Nashville, citing the rising cost of doing business in California and a desire to consolidate its operations. It already operates manufacturing facilities in Tennessee.

Nissan has vacated most employees from the facility but will retain a limited occupancy of the campus until January, the company said.
