A Metrolink commuter train traveling from L.A.’s Union Station to Moorpark collided head on with a Union Pacific freight train late Friday afternoon, toppling one of the passenger cars onto its side.
Firefighters battled a fire under part of the wreckage and pulled people from the Metrolink car, which was partly torn open. Authorities on Saturday morning were confirming at least 18 dead and 135 injured among the 225 people believed to have been on board.
A MetroLink spokesperson said the Ventura County Line train, which carried three passenger cars, had left Union Station at 3:35 p.m.
A Los Angles County Fire Department spokesman said the trains collided at 4:23 p.m. near Heatherlee Lane and Endora Avenue in the Chatsworth area of the San Fernando Valley.
