Michelson Medical Research Foundation
Michelson, a billionaire philanthropist and orthopedic spinal surgeon, holds nearly 1,000 medical patents. He gained much of his wealth in 2005 after a $1.35 billion settlement with medical manufacturing giant Medtronic over his patents. He is the president and co-chair of the Michelson Medical Research Foundation. He has also been forces behind the California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, one of two centers planned for a UCLA research park at the former Westside Pavilion mall. Last year he announced that he committed more than $100 million toward the efforts. Earlier this year he received the Gordon and Llura Gund Leadership Award at Research!America’s annual Advocacy Awards.
