Candidates for Governor Raise Millions

While Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls Al Checchi and Rep. Jane Harmon spend their own money on TV advertising, other candidates took advantage of the lifting of fund-raising limits and pulled in millions of dollars in campaign donations.

According to campaign fund-raising statements, the four major Democratic candidates for governor raised a combined $24 million during the first 10 weeks of 1998. By the June 2 primary, this total is expected to exceed the $28 million spent on the gubernatorial race in 1994.

A federal judge voided Proposition 208, which had capped individual contributions to $1,000.

Other than candidates running for governor, Sen Bill Lockyer, D-Hayward, led all other candidates for state office. He raised $3.3 million for his run for attorney general. Checchi, who has $800 million in personal wealth, donated $11.4 million to his own campaign.
