Parker, who got his start in computer science as a hacker, founded Napster, a music file-sharing company, in 1999. In 2004, he joined Facebook’s founding company. His shares in Facebook were worth $2.6 billion when the company, now Meta Platforms Inc. went public, in 2012. Parker also invested $15 million in Spotify in 2010, taking 5% ownership of the company and serving on its board until 2017. He earned about $1.5 billion in 2018 by cashing out that position when Spotify went public.
Education:Â Parker graduated in 1998 from Chantilly High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. He did not go to college but instead became a tech entrepreneur.
Starting Young: Parker cofounded music sharing service Napster at age 19 and Plaxo, a contact management startup, at 21.
Charitable Giving:Â He has given money to charities through the Parker Foundation, started in 2015. The following year, the foundation launched the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, to which Parker has donated nearly $375 million.
