Donald Sterling’s wealth can be broken down largely into two buckets: basketball and real estate. In August 2014, Sterling was forced to sell the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team after making racist remarks, which he sold to former Microsoft Corp. chief executive Steve Ballmer for $2 billion. Sterling has acquired hundreds of apartment buildings in Los Angeles since the 1960s, primarily in the Westside and Koreatown submarkets. He also owns the Beverly Hills Plaza Hotel.
Lawsuit: In 2016, Donald Sterling settled a lawsuit with the National Basketball Association after claiming the league and his wife, Rochelle Sterling, conspired to sell the Clippers.
Family: Donald filed for divorce from his wife in 2015 after six decades of marriage before changing his mind. Also in 2015, a judge ruled that Vanessa Stiviano, who was showered with gifts from Donald Sterling, must return all $2.6 million worth of gifts on the basis that he hadn’t received Rochelle Sterling’s consent to give them.
Television: FX on Hulu released “Clipped” in June, a limited series that goes behind the scenes of Sterling’s life ban from the NBA.
