What’s the best advice you ever got?
My father Hank was a lieutenant in the Los Angeles Police Department, retiring over 50 years ago after a full and proud career. In my earliest years he told me that the greatest damage one could do to him or herself was to develop a reputation for cutting corners or taking liberty with the truth. He told me that to lose others’ trust in your commitment to doing a job well, or in your being honest and straightforward about yourself and your work, was profoundly self-destructive. My father shared this advice from the perspective of a police official, but I have repeatedly found his words to be relevant and integral to all aspects of managing others and building a business and, perhaps most importantly, a lasting inspiration to do and be one’s best.
