It remains to be seen whether Los Angeles will see the Memorial Coliseum get its much-needed overhaul to attract an NFL team. Even more uncertain is whether the city could get public support for using taxpayer funds to help pay for the renovation. The Business Journal Forum asks:

Should city tax dollars be used to subsidize reconstruction of the Memorial Coliseum?

Gordon Gibson

Absolutely not. I don’t think that any sports stadium should be supported by public dollars. I don’t think it would bring back the money a city would put into it. We’ve survived very well without an NFL team. Besides, I don’t think the Coliseum is a proper place for a sports venue. It’s too difficult to get in and out of. The parking is horrible. A stadium should be anyplace but there.

Yes, I do, because I think the city will get a return on its investment. A major NFL team will definitely pump some life into L.A.’s economy.

Absolutely not. I would much prefer to see our tax dollars funneled into the school system, period.

Art Sosa

No. Because it’s not something that we all would go to. Tax dollars should go to other services, like our fire and police departments, which we all need. The Coliseum is usually for sports fans, and not everyone is a fan.

Nana Yalley

Most certainly I would. I think the Coliseum is a big part of our city’s cultural history. To maintain a site like this is to our best interest.

That’s tough. I don’t know if it will pump enough revenue into the L.A. economy to really make a difference. If it brings in sufficient revenue and employment, then it’s worth it. On the other hand, we have so many sports venues already. I really don’t see a complete need for it.
