THE MONEY: Much of Marc Nathanson’s wealth comes from the 1999 sale of Falcon Communications. Nathanson sold the company to Charter Communications for $3.7 billion. Nathanson then went on to found Mapleton Investments. Mapleton Properties, its investment arm, has a portfolio valued at roughly $700 million. The company, run by son Adam Nathanson, owns assets in the Western United States. This year, Nathanson’s real estate holdings and art collection were flat, and his direct investments and equities were up 15%.
THE BUZZ: Nathanson currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Norway. He was appointed in June of last year by President Joe Biden. Nathanson was chairman of the United States Agency for Global Media during the Clinton-Gore and Bush-Cheney administrations. His wife, Jane, a psychologist, founded the Nathanson Family Resilience Center at UCLA Medical and is a trustee for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Their endowment at UCLA resulted in the Jane and Marc Nathanson Family Professor in Psychiatry chair. The Nathanson family also invests in numerous professional sports teams, including the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, the MLS team Seattle Sounders FC, the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds and the NWSL’s Angel City FC in Los Angeles.
