Kramer became CEO of the Academy last June and had to manage the
aftermath of one of the most shocking events ever on live television
when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock during the Oscars presentation.
This year, he formed a crisis team to handle such incidents, although
nothing approaching that magnitude occurred. Earlier, he took over as
director and president of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures just
a few months before the start of pandemic-related lockdowns, which
delayed the museum’s opening. It finally opened in September 2021 in
an Enzo Piano-designed building on L.A.’s Miracle Mile.
