That’s Moxie! Robot Maker Raises $19M

Pasadena-based robotics developer Embodied Inc. recently raised $19.25 million, according to a SEC filing by the company.

Embodied, which according to its website builds “socially and emotionally intelligent” companion robots “with believable personality and empathy,” did not publicly announce the funding raise, nor did a company spokesperson respond to requests for comment from the Business Journal. Citing confidentiality, the company declined to identify the investors of the round, which officially closed in November.

The company’s principal product is called Moxie, an artificial intelligence-enabled robotic companion for young children that operates on a platform developed by Embodied called SocialX. The device — which Time selected as one of its top inventions of 2020 — is designed to foster social and emotional development through interactions themed around concepts such as kindness, friendship and respect.

Moxie robots can be purchased through the company’s website for $999, or rented for $149 per month. Both options require a subscription, which costs $39 dollars per month with a one-year commitment.

The benefits of developing empathetic AI will go beyond emotional support for kids, according to the company’s website, which cited mental health support and companionship for elders as other potential applications for the technology behind Moxie.

Embodied Chief Executive Paolo Pirjanian told the Business Journal in a May 2021 interview that Moxie “represents an early glimpse of the robotic and machine-learning capabilities the company is working to develop.” That same month, Embodied announced that it had greatly expanded its team through the acquisition of the London-based Kami Intelligence, the initial developers of Moxie.

Embodied, which was founded in 2016, formerly operated under the company name Carebots Inc.
