The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the 200 largest local public companies closed down for the week ended Feb. 5 as investors worried about troubling domestic and global economic news.

The weighted LABJ index dropped 2 percent to 108.34, with decliners outpacing gainers 106 to 63.

Monrovia drone manufacturer Aerovironment Inc. plunged 30 percent to $24.15 after the federal government release a proposed fiscal 2011 defense budget that analysts said did not bode well for aerospace contractors.

MannKind Corp. fell 15 percent to $8.75 after the Valencia biotech said launch of its innovative inhaled insulin therapy, which awaits U.S. regulatory approval, may be slightly delayed so that the company can substitute an updated inhaler that it has been developing.

Avery Dennison Corp. fell 14 percent to $32.77 after the Pasadena adhesive label and ticket maker reported fourth-quarter profit that fell short of Wall Street expectations.

The top gainer was Sport Chalet Inc., which jumped 39 percent to $3.03 after the La Canada Flintridge sports retailer reported a better-than-expected quarter.

Commerce discount chain 99 Cents Only Stores gained 21 percent to $15.39, also after reporting better-than-expected earnings.

Staar Surgical Co. rose 13 percent to $3.85 after the Monrovia ophthalmic product maker said that Japan had approved its new implantable lens for correcting myopia.
