Ad Agency Director Mixes and Matches With Media

When Gayle Gray first came to Rubin Postaer and Associates 20 years ago, she wanted a job that would fit with her graphic design degree from UCLA. Unfortunately, the advertising agency didn’t have such an opening.

“The only position they had available was in the media department where they were seeking an assistant,” Gray said. “And I remember that after I had expressed my interest I had to ask them what that position was and they had to explain it to me.”

Fresh out of college and eager for a full-time job Gray took the job not knowing that it would be the beginning of a two-decade career at the advertising agency, where she moved up the ranks and was recently appointed director of integrated media.

Gray said one of the biggest changes in the media sector was the addition of a new medium: the Internet. Part of her job at RPA’s office in Santa Monica is teaching clients how to use it.

She is currently overseeing all of the accounts for Honda automobiles national branding and corporate image campaigns. Other clients include nutritional snack maker SoyJoy, furniture manufacturer La-Z-Boy and camera company Pentax.

While at the office Gray’s main focus is transitioning her clients into the digital medium. At home it’s all about transitioning her 7-year-old son, Parker, from first-grade math to second-grade equations.

“After work, I come home and have to relearn my second-grade math and spelling to help him with his homework,” she said.

When she is not busy with her son, Gray likes to watch sports with her husband, Cleties. She enjoys watching the Los Angeles Lakers play, but her favorite sport is football.

“The NFL is my favorite to watch,” she said. “I also like to watch the Bruins play and am a fan of the Miami Dolphins, despite their record.”

Gray lives in Los Angeles. In her spare time, she admits that she enjoys reality TV. Among her favorites are “The Amazing Race,” “Project Runway” and “America’s Top Model.”
