Table Maker Throws iPad A Curve

When Sally Sirkin Lewis was looking for a table to set her iPad on last year, she was not impressed by the bland products on the market. So the veteran furniture designer decided to make her own table for tablets or laptops.

And so was born the @Table, the latest offering from Lewis’ luxury custom furniture design shop, J. Robert Scott Inc. Billed as a table “suited for your connected lifestyle,” the @Table has a small base, a curved stand and a swivel top. Surface options include leather, parchment, stainless steel, wood or even snakeskin.

“I wanted a little more pizzazz and flair than the ordinary computer table,” said Lewis, the company’s president.

After a career as a furniture designer, Lewis co-founded J. Robert Scott 42 years ago in Culver City with her then-husband. The company has since moved to Inglewood, where its workforce of 120 assembles high-end custom furniture in a 70,000-square-foot factory. Lewis’ furniture designs are on sale in company-owned showrooms in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Dallas and London.

The company has long designed custom entertainment centers but the @Table is its first foray into furniture for computers. Lewis said the @Table is primarily intended for home use but can also be a supplement for an executive office.

At $2,910, the table is more expensive than the iPad it’s designed to support.
