The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has canceled its previously scheduled concerts for the 2020-2021 season at Walt Disney Concert hall through June 9, 2021.

The cancellations follow a string of pandemic cancellations for LA Phil.

In April the orchestra canceled the remainder of its spring season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. At that time Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel said he would take no compensation during the spring cancellation period. LA Phil also initiated furloughs, salary reductions and other cost-cutting measures.

The, in May, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association canceled all 2020 season performances at Hollywood Bowl and the Ford Theatres due to coronavirus concerns. Those concerts feature a variety of artists including performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a resident company of the county-owned Los Angeles Music Center.

At that time LA Phil predicted a budget shortfall of $80 million due to the cancellation of both the spring concerts and Bowl concerts.

In September, Walt Disney Hall concerts were canceled through Dec. 31.

In an Oct. 20 statement LA Phil Chief Executive Chad Smith couched the bad news in a list of announcements of new media partnerships and digital initiatives to bring programming to audiences.

The initiatives include new episodes of the media project Sound/Stage, which pairs short concert films with essays, interviews and other performances, and “In Concert at the Hollywood Bowl,” a six-episode TV series hosted by Dudamel and airing on PBS stations beginning Jan. 15.

“As hard as it is to lose entire seasons of at the Hollywood Bowl, The Ford and now Walt Disney Concert Hall, we are responding creatively under Gustavo’s leadership, so we can continue to bring music, learning programs and important conversations to the largest possible audience in Los Angeles and beyond,” Smith said in the statement.

The LA Phil is one of the largest orchestras in the world with a reported annual operating budget of $125 million.
