Los Angeles has been selected as the 2018 host city for the National League of Cities’ annual city summit.

The summit is an annual gathering of city officials from across the nation discussing the most pressing challenges.

The 2018 edition, to be held in downtown Los Angeles in November of that year, is expected to draw about 3,800 officials and their families from cities around the nation. The Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board estimates the summit will generate at least $4.7 million dollars in direct business sales and nearly half a million dollars in local sales taxes.

“The National League of Cities’ 2018 City Summit will be an economic driver for the entire region of Los Angeles,” said Ernest Wooden Jr., chief executive of the convention board. “Through the city summit we have the opportunity to show the entire country how Los Angeles is taking the lead as a modern metropolis and how we utilize every unique corner of this spectacular city for economic growth.”

The National League of Cities board voted on the host city this past Sunday; the convention board released the information Friday. Among the other contender cities was Long Beach.

The last time Los Angeles hosted the city summit – then named the Congress of Cities – was in 1999. This year, the summit is in Pittsburgh; next year it’s in Charlotte.
