Famous L.A. Eatery Roscoe’s Files for Bankruptcy

Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles has declared bankruptcy, according to documents filed in Los Angeles federal court. The popular L.A.-based restaurant’s parent company, East Coast Foods, also of Los Angeles, submitted paperwork detailing almost $15 million in unpaid bills and few assets.

One of the largest creditors is a former employee, Daniel Beasley, who won a $1.6 million judgment against the company for racial discrimination last year. Cummins & White, the Newport Beach law firm representing Beasley, was also awarded attorneys’ fees putting the amount owed for the case at more than $3.2 million.

Roscoe’s has been a popular food spot for celebrities and politicians. President Barack Obama visited in July 2012 and it has been frequented by a diverse group of celebrities such as Larry King and Snoop Dogg.

Roscoe’s was founded in 1975 by Herbert Hudson, who still operates the six L.A.-area locations and one in Anaheim.

Hudson’s attorney did not immediately respond to request for comment.
