Musk’s Boring Co. Proposes Tunnel Connecting Subway Station, Dodger Stadium

Billionaire Elon Musk’s Boring Co. on Aug. 15 released a proposal to build a 3.6-mile-long tunnel between Dodger Stadium and one of three nearby subway stations and run high-speed pods that could whisk passengers to or from the stadium in four minutes.

No cost estimate was put forward for the “Dugout Loop” proposal, which was released the day before a public comment period and two weeks before an initial meeting of the Los Angeles city Bureau of Engineering. But the company stated the project would be “100 percent privately funded.”

“The purpose of Dugout Loop is to help reduce traffic in Los Angeles by providing a clean and efficient public transportation option to Dodger Stadium,” the Boring Co. says in the project description on its website. “Dugout Loop will complement existing public transportation systems and provide an all-electric and affordable option that will transport baseball fans and concertgoers directly to the Dodger Stadium… in less than 4 minutes!”

According to the proposal on the Boring Co.’s website and on the city Bureau of Engineering’s website, the tunnel would run from Vin Scully Way just north of Sunset Boulevard and head west mostly under Sunset to one of three existing Metro Red Line subway stations along Vermont Avenue, either at Beverly, Santa Monica or Sunset boulevards. Passenger access to the system at this end would be through the chosen subway station.

The Boring Co. on its website says it has held preliminary discussions with Metro on the compatibility of the project with existing Metro operations.

The project description states the pods will be able to carry between eight and 16 passengers at speeds up to 150 miles per hour. Initially, the system would carry up to 1,400 people to or from each event at the stadium, with the possibility to double that capacity later on.

The Dugout Loop is not the only proposal to carry fans to and from Dodger Stadium. In April, Aerial Rapid Transit Technologies, a company formed by Drew McCourt, son of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt – who still retains an ownership stake in the parking lots surrounding the stadium – unveiled a proposal for an aerial gondola system that could take up to 10,000 fans from Union Station to Dodger Stadium, with a one-way trip lasting five minutes. Metro is currently reviewing that proposal, which is estimated to cost $125 million.
