Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis said July 6 on Twitter that city commissioners had voted to accept Boring Co.’s bid though other firms will have 45 days to submit competing proposals.
The Boring Co. plan, which was submitted June 21, calls for digging two 3-mile tunnels, one in each direction, between the city’s downtown and beachfront, that would be called the “Las Olas Loop,” named after the city’s Las Olas Beach.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Boring Co. officials peg the project’s price tag at about $60 million to $72 million. Riders would reportedly pay $5 a ride.
“This represents an innovative approach to addressing traffic congestion and transit needs in 21st century America,” Trantalis tweeted. “Boring Co. is off to a successful start in Vegas with its system there and could help us overcome the frequent traffic on the main routes to the beach.”
In city documents, Fort Lauderdale said the project would help advance “transportation that prioritizes safety and emphasizes multimodal mobility and accessibility.”
In June, Boring Co. opened its first underground transit system using Tesla vehicles under the Las Vegas Convention Center.
