GLG Gaming Inc. raised a $5 million seed round to expand ProGuides, its instructional video platform for gamers.

GLG, which does business as ProGuides, will use the funding to install a new production studio at its Satwelle headquarters and to staff up its engineering, content development and marketing departments.

Some of the funds will also be used to court gaming influencers and streamers, whose presence in videos will help expand the platform, the company said.

ProGuides Chief Executive Sam Wang in a statement that the company’s product is “the definitive platform to help gamers get better.”

He added that “2020 will be a marquee year for esports learning, and we’re excited to be leading the market’s development.”

The funding round was finalized Jan. 24 and led by Santa Monica-based M13 Ventures.

“ProGuides is taking coaching and skills development into the gaming world,” M13 Partner Gautam Gupta said in a statement.

Gupta added that ProGuides is “off to a great start having built a highly active, fast-growing esports community, and M13 is excited to help accelerate their reach across new games and new gamers.”

“With M13 by our side, we’ll accelerate our technological development, introduce new content and engage our growing audience in totally new ways,” ProGuides’ Wang said.

ProGuides was founded in 2015 and its platform launched in August 2019. It is designed to be a “master class for gamers,” according the company, and to provide esports coaching and tutorials.

ProGuides’ library currently hosts videos on eight different video games, including West L.A.-based Riot Games Inc.’s “League of Legends.” The company plans to expand coverage to 20 game titles by the end of 2020.

Venice-based investors Amplify.LA participated in the round alongside Palo Alto-based Quest Venture Partners and San Francisco-based venture firm GFR Fund.

Downtown-based investment firm Greycroft also joined the round via its GC VR Gaming Tracker Fund. The fund was created by Greycroft partner Jon Goldman in 2017 to invest exclusively in gaming and virtual reality projects.
