Sterling, a real estate industry veteran, is perhaps best known as the former owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. He purchased the San Diego Clippers in 1981 and moved the basketball team to Los Angeles three years later. In 2014, he sold the team for $2 billion to former Microsoft Corp. Chief Steve Ballmer following a public scandal. All litigation involving that scandal has been settled. Sterling also owns more than 160 apartment buildings in Los Angeles and has been investing in apartments since the 1960s. He was No. 15 on the Business Journal’s annual Wealthiest Angelenos list last year with a net worth of $5.9 billion.
