Mario and Friends Are On the Way

Jakks Pacific Inc. is releasing a toy line based on characters from the upcoming Universal Pictures release “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

The Santa Monica-based designer, manufacturer and marketer of toys and consumer products is coming out with posable figures, accessories, playsets, and radio-controlled toys based on the film on Feb. 26.

Joe Lawandus, senior vice president and general manager of global toys, hardlines and publishing for Universal Products and Experiences, said that in partnership with Illumination, the animation studio for the film, and Nintendo Co. Ltd., it has enjoyed collaborating with Jakks Pacific on the line of toys for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

“We’re as excited as the fans for the film’s release and can’t wait for their reaction to our line of film-inspired toys,” Lawandus said in a statement.

Universal Products and Experiences is a division of Universal Parks & Resorts, part of Comcast Corp. subsidiary NBCUniversal.

Craig Drobis, senior vice president of marketing at Jakks Pacific, said the company was excited to work with Illumination, Nintendo and Universal Products & Experiences to develop a line of toys for the Mario Bros. film.

“Our collector and fan community will be thrilled with Jakks’ new scales that really bring home the rich details inspired by the characters and sets on the big screen, including our new 5-inch figures with realistic acrylic eyes and movie accessories in a premium window box,” Drobis said in a statement. Co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” reaches theaters on April 7.

Illumination’s library includes two of the top 10 animated films of all time — “Minions” and “Despicable Me 3” — and has brought in more than $8 billion in global box office receipts.
