The Home Depot is hiring more than 5,150 part-time and full-time positions in Los Angeles.
The Atlanta-based company, which has 2,200 stores nationwide including 36 in L.A. County, is offering flexible, full-time and part-time positions, including opportunities in customer service and sales, store support, freight, merchandising and warehouse roles.

In a tumultuous labor market, the chain plans to incentivize recruits with a range of health and personal benefits for every stage of life, including tuition reimbursement, a company performance-based cash bonus program, paid family leave, back-up dependent care, a 401(k) savings plan with company match and a discounted company stock purchase program. Over the last three years, employees, dubbed “associates” by the company, have received more than $1 billion in Success Sharing bonus awards, according to the company.

About 90% of Home Depot’s store leaders began their careers as hourly associates, according to the company. They include District Manager Shirley Barahona, who oversees nine stores in Los Angeles County.

“I personally joined the company as a part-time cashier 19 years ago and I continued to accelerate throughout the company,” she said.
Barahona said that even during the pandemic, Home Depot has seen a lot of business.
“We’ve maintained as an essential business,” she said. “At a time when a lot of customers just stayed home, it was just as busy.”

That trend is continuing, driving the need for the new hires.
“Customers continue to invest in their homes,” she said. “We want our associates to pick up those DIY projects.”

She said spring is one of the busiest selling seasons of the year, and that the chain typically hires a lot of people at this time of the year to prepare for the increase in customer traffic.
In addition to salespeople, the company is looking for workers who could upgrade their skills for roles in software development, cybersecurity, data science, marketing, supply chain and finance. Barahona noted that the hiring process has been streamlined online.

“We have a new accelerated hiring office,” she said. “Candidates can get interviewed and hired within a day.”
The hiring spree reflects continued sales growth. According to the Feb. 22 fourth-quarter earnings report, fiscal year 2021 was a record year for Home Depot, with $150 billion in sales. The company reported double-digit compound growth over fiscal 2020 numbers.
