Hollywood Residential Project for Artists Opens
Asset: The Hollywood Arts Collective Cicely Tyson Building.

A new affordable housing development has debuted in Hollywood – reserved exclusively for artists.

Named in honor of the late American actress Cicely Tyson, known for her portrayal of strong Black women, The Hollywood Arts Collective Cicely Tyson Residential Building is a project offering 152 units of affordable living.

It was developed in partnership between the Entertainment Community Fund, formerly known as The Actors Fund, and Brentwood-based affordable and supportive housing developer Thomas Safran & Associates. The building is dedicated primarily to low-income, professional creatives and artistic individuals – who must prove either their income from arts-related work or engagement in, and commitment to, artistic practices in order to qualify.

The seven-story property replaced a city-owned parking lot, located at 1633 N. Wilcox Ave., just steps away from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It offers a range of floorplans, from studios up to three-bedroom units. In addition to the residential core of the building, the project also includes a performing arts courtyard and a new two-story office space that will serve as the western region headquarters for the Entertainment Community Fund.

According to the Entertainment Community Fund’s website, the building embodies “a world in which individuals contributing to our cultural vibrancy are supported, valued and economically secure.”

“We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Entertainment Community Fund, who has been an instrumental partner in the development process and will be providing social services to both our residents and the surrounding Hollywood community,” Jordan Pynes, president of Thomas Safran & Associates, said in a statement. “We thank the city of Los Angeles for their continued support and look forward to participating in the growth of this creative community.”

The unveiling marks the end of a 14-year process, dating back to 2010. Adjacent to The Cicely Tyson Residential Building will be The Hollywood Arts Collective Rita Moreno Arts Building, which is currently under construction and expected to be completed in fall 2025. The Rita Moreno building will include a black box theater, an art gallery and nonprofit arts office space. In total, the two buildings are a $120 million undertaking.
