Chicago-based Ebony magazine is moving its primary operations to Los Angeles, according to reports.

The publication also plans to lay off more than 30 percent of its staff.

The magazine, which has focused on African-American life and culture since its founding in 1945 by John H. Johnson, will join its sister publication, Jet, under Jet’s L.A.-based editor, Tracy Ferguson, according to the Chicago Tribune.

CVG Group, a Houston private equity firm, bought both publications last year from Chicago’s Johnson Publishing Co.

Ebony Media, the parent company of Ebony and Jet, is expected to keep a small office in Chicago. Linda Johnson Rice, Ebony Media’s chief executive, will reportedly remain in that position.

Representatives of Ebony and Jet could not be reached for comment Monday.
