Villaraigosa Raises $652,000 for Mayoral Runoff Election

Los Angeles City Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa reported Wednesday that he had raised $652,000 in the first four weeks of the mayoral runoff election against incumbent Mayor James Hahn.

In a campaign disclosure statement filed with the City Ethics Commission one day before the filing deadline, the Villaraigosa campaign said it also spent $78,000, leaving him with about $575,000 cash on hand.

While the pace of contributions to Villaraigosa’s campaign has accelerated since the primary, it’s still slower than the pace of his 2001 runoff campaign, in which he collected $2.9 million but still lost to Hahn.

Nonetheless, Villaraigosa campaign manager Ace Smith maintained funding would not be a problem. “We will have the resources necessary to communicate with voters,” he said.

Hahn campaign advisor Kam Kuwata said that the Hahn campaign would submit its disclosure statement on Thursday before the filing deadline.

Going into the runoff, Hahn held the fundraising edge, raising $3 million to Villaraigosa’s $2 million, excluding city matching funds. However, Villaraigosa spent only $2.5 million to Hahn’s $3.5 million, leaving him with just about twice as much cash on hand: $242,000 to. $123,000. However, any money left over from the primary cannot be used in the runoff election under city ethics rules.
