Demonstration Planned for End of Month

Local labor leaders are planning a major rally and civil disobedience march that will close down Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport during rush hour later this month.

The march, scheduled for Sept. 28, is aimed to bring attention to what union officials claim is exploitation of immigrant workers in the hotel industry. It comes as part of a campaign to unionize workers at the 13 hotels that line Century Boulevard that has led to several confrontations between union organizers and hotel employers in recent months.

Hotel operators have criticized the union campaign as disruptive and have said local unions are trying to gain enough leverage to shut down the entire local hotel industry with strikes if they don’t get favorable contract terms.
