Ban on Smoking at County-Run Beaches Made Permanent

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to make permanent a temporary ban on smoking at county-run beaches, joining the cities of Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Malibu and others.

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to make the temporary ban, enacted last summer, a permanent one. County-run beaches, including the Zuma, Mother’s Beach in Marina del Rey and coastal strips in several South Bay cities, are subject to the ban. Parking lots next to the beaches are not included in the ban.

In the last couple years, environmental activists concerned about pollution from discarded cigarette butts have joined health advocates in pushing for smoking bans on beaches. There has been some resistance from merchants along piers and other beachfront shops; Santa Monica last year voted to exempt its pier from its smoking ban.

In other action, the board voted to grant a 5 percent pay raise to members of the Professional Peace Officers Association, which represents 6,700 county law enforcement personnel, including sheriff’s deputies. The board also voted to add union member Kathy Ochoa from Service Employees International Union Local 660 to the advisory board overseeing the King/Drew Medical Center.
