Dieting With Some Spirit

Vodka as a healthy beverage? One local entrepreneur says, “Drink up.”

Adam Kamenstein, a former federal prosecutor who gave up his legal career to try his hand at the booze business, is marketing and selling a line of low-calorie, fruit-flavored vodka drinks. The Voli Light Vodka brand, with each drink containing up to 81 calories per shot – compared with other flavored vodkas in the 100-110 range – targets consumers “who care what they are putting into their bodies,” Kamenstein said. “The reality is most people do drink alcohol, so why not give people the option of something that tastes good and has less calories?”

Kamenstein’s Voli Spirits LLC, based in West Hollywood with an office in New York and 16 employees split between the two locations, officially launched last year. He said the company’s on track to take in “several million dollars” this year.

Voli Light Vodka bottles can be found in some local stores and restaurants, and even some national chains such as Uno’s Pizzeria.

Kamenstein, 41, left the New York District Attorney’s Office and moved to Los Angeles a decade ago as a deputy in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. After a brief stint at a law firm, he looked for an opening to pursue his business venture.

“I love to cook and I’m very health conscious,” he said. “So when I looked around and saw that there weren’t any low-calorie spirits out there, I decided that was my chance.”

Voli contains 60-proof vodka, lower than average alcohol content, and it’s custom-made in Cognac, France.

“They have more talent in blending flavors,” he said.
