Santa Monica–headquartered Universal Music Group Inc. signed a deal with British digital audio streaming firm Mixcloud on Oct. 15, ensuring that UMG artists will be compensated for the use of their music on Mixcloud’s platform.

The subscription service Mixcloud offers includes long-form and serialized audio content, as well as podcasts and upwards of 15 million radio shows. Founded 2008, Mixcloud pays out royalties by employing a content identification system which tracks music usage and sends it to local performing rights and royalty collection services in the United States.

“Mixcloud has developed an innovative platform where audiences can uniquely discover artists and experience music through curated stations, podcasts, DJ sets and other influencer-driven audio formats,” Universal Music Group Vice President of Digital Business James Healey said. “Working together, we will expand the programming that’s available across Mixcloud and give their passionate fans more choice over how they consume music and interact with their favorite artists,” Healey added.
