Stephen K. Bannon has stepped down as executive chairman of far-right news and commentary website Breitbart News Network in Westwood.

The website confirmed the news in a brief post on Jan. 9, saying that Bannon and Breitbart would work together on a smooth and orderly transition.

“I’m proud of what the Breitbart team has accomplished in so short a period of time in building out a world class news platform,” Bannon said, in the Breitbart post. The item also quoted Breitbart chief executive Larry Solov, who called Bannon “a valued part of Breitbart’s legacy.”

“We will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish,” Solov said.

Bannon’s departure comes in the wake of the executive’s critical comments about Trump in Michael Wolff’s book “Fire and Fury,” published last week.

Bannon had left Breitbart in August of 2016 to join Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and later served as President Trump’s chief White House strategist. He re-joined Breitbart one year later after Trump fired him.
