The Santa Monica-based social media platform announced Nov. 15 that it reached an agreement with the global music company for users to add music from its artists, including Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Britney Spears, via Snapchat’s Sounds library. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Additionally, Snapchat has added Sounds to the company’s Lenses, a collection of templates for its augmented reality experiences. Besides giving users the opportunity to access Sony artists, the company also plans to offer lenses with preselected songs to make pictures of individuals appear as if they are singing. Snap’s Cameo Sound lenses will allow users to star in their own music videos. Users can identify these lenses with sounds by a musical note icon on the lens.
The company estimates that more than 200 million subscribers use its AR experiences, just under two-thirds of the 306 million daily active users the company reported in its Oct. 21 earnings release.
Snapchat remains confident about the implementation of augmented reality; the company paid $500 million in May for WaveOptics Ltd., the company that produces the displays in Snap’s Spectacles glasses.
