Century City-based Allen Media Group plans a fourth-quarter launch of The Weather Channel Plus, a subscription streaming service, the company announced June 30.

Allen Media Group, which operates the Weather Channel along with 23 local TV stations, said the streaming service will offer more than 50 news and entertainment channels at a monthly subscription rate of $4.99.

The company expects The Weather Channel Plus to reach 30 million subscribers within five years.

“The Weather Channel has been voted the most-trusted news brand in America for 11 consecutive years, and the fifth most-trusted brand in America overall, which makes it the perfect brand for a direct-to-consumer streaming platform,” said Byron Allen, founder, chairman and chief executive of Allen Media Group.

Allen acquired The Weather Channel in a $300 million deal in 2018.

“We’ve aggregated some of the best news and entertainment content while keeping it affordable and accessible at the same time," Allen said. "We are highly confident that consumers will enjoy The Weather Channel Plus streaming service for decades to come.”

The Weather Channel Plus will be available on a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart televisions, gaming consoles and laptops.

Allen Media Group also controls 12 TV networks and two ad-supported streaming outlets, The Grio and Local Now, which launched in April.
