California Resources Drops Massive Carson Oil Drilling Plan

California Resources Corp. announced Monday that it has dropped plans for a major drilling project in Carson because of low oil prices.

The Westwood oil giant, recently spun off from Occidental Petroleum Corp. of Houston, said in a statement that it has withdrawn its application to the city of Carson for its proposal to drill up to 200 wells in the northeast corner of the city, near California State University Dominguez Hills.

“California Resources Corporation has concluded that our proposed Dominguez energy project is no longer practical in the current commodity price environment, and we are asking the city to stop processing the project,” the statement from spokeswoman Margita Thompson said.

When Occidental first proposed the project three years ago, the company said in documents that it hoped to extract up to 6,000 barrels of oil and three million cubic feet of natural gas a day from the old Dominguez Hills oil field once the 15-year drilling phase was completed. But the project ran into opposition from major environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and some local residents.

California Resources’ announcement marks the second withdrawal of an oil drilling project in the county this month due to the oil price crash. Earlier, Freeport McMoRan Inc. of Phoenix announced it was withdrawing its application to drill or expand three wells in an existing oil field near USC.

The Los Angeles Business Journal this week reports on that and other impacts of low oil prices on Los Angeles-area projects and companies.

Shares of California Resources closed up nearly 10 percent Monday to $4.45 as oil prices rebounded and sent shares of most oil companies higher.
