Law Firm Weil Expands Into Los Angeles Market
Tana Ryan is managing partner of Weil's new Century City outpost.

Law firm giant Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP has landed in Los Angeles, aiming to build a Century City outpost centered around its private equity work.

The firm announced the expansion last month, in conjunction with a similar move in San Francisco.

These two new outposts will work largely in alignment with the firm’s longtime Silicon Valley office in Redwood Shores.

The Century City office starts with Tana Ryan as the local managing partner along with two associates.

Ryan said it was “the perfect moment” to join  as she sought to take the next step in her career as Weil wanted to move into the market.

“I was already here in Los Angeles working almost exclusively in the private equity space, with a focus on middle market,” she said.

“Weil has really taken on the perspective of growth and bringing new energy to private equity. The West Coast was something they knew needed a focus. It was a perfect synergy between us,” she added.

With the expansions, Weil aims to further establish its private equity chops.

One of the firm’s private equity leaders, lawyer Kyle Krpata, is based in Silicon Valley.

“When we were looking around trying to determine how to build the group, we identified Los Angeles as a prime market,” he said.

“In recent years, the middle market for private equity in Los Angeles has really blown up and there is a ton of opportunity there,” Krpata added.

Weil brought Ryan and San Francisco partner Navneeta Rekhi over from Latham & Watkins.

Ryan said she expected her office to add more attorneys in the coming months, building up a full-service operation.

“We always want to be full-service,” she said. “Private equity is our first focus, but these things happen so organically, and I think we’re going to see what the market brings us.”
