Kansas City Firm Beefs Up LA Office

A Century City shakeup in mid-April saw one office continue on its growth path and another make a leadership change in response.

Kansas City-based Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP beefed up its national litigation practice in a move that added Jan Dodd and Steven Weisburd to their Los Angeles operation. Meanwhile, the neighboring office of Carlton Fields named Ellyn Garofalo as its Century City managing shareholder to replace the poached Weisburd.

“Shook’s powerhouse offerings, including product liability and class action, fall right in our wheelhouse,” Weisburd said in a statement. “I’m excited to be part of this nationwide highly respected team. It feels like home to us.”

Shook, which broke into the L.A. market in 2019, has stocked up on litigators here in recent months. Weisburd is handling class action and appellate litigation and Dodd, who also comes from Carlton Fields, is attached to the firm’s signature product liability team.

In March, the office also added Alycia Degen from Sidley Austin LLP to its product liability group and Michael Shortnacy from King & Spalding LLP to the class action team.

“These top-notch litigators are a natural fit for our firm,” said Shook chair Madeleine McDonough in a statement. “We are excited to have them with us, and we are already getting requests from clients who know these lawyers and appreciate even greater depth and breadth in service.”

Garofalo, who joined Carlton Fields in 2021, focuses on complex civil litigation. She takes over an office that has grown to a couple dozen attorneys since opening doors in 2014; Weisburd had taken the job of office managing shareholder there last year.

“Carlton Fields is known for its world-class lawyers, a collegial firm culture, and a deep commitment to client service,” Garofalo said. “I am excited to lead an office with colleagues committed to these principles and a passion for the community.”
