Founder, Chair, Idealab
In addition to founding Idealab, which celebrates its 28th anniversary this year, Gross has started more than 175 companies and authored more than 100 patents in areas such as solar, robotics, energy and artificial intelligence. Idealab, a startup studio, has created more than 15,000 jobs, started more than 150 companies and has had more than 50 successful public offerings and acquisitions. In addition to serving as Idealab’s board chairman, Gross is a member of the board of trustees at both the California Institute of Technology and the ArtCenter College of Design.
What’s the best advice you ever got?
Focus, that I should do fewer things at once. And I never followed it.
What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category?
On two extremes, “Godfather” and “Airplane.”
What’s at the top of your bucket list?
To make something that benefits a billion people on earth.
What was your first car?
A fixed-up Lotus Europa in college.
Would you like to have it back?
I have it back, my brother tracked down the original car I had and got it for me for my 60th birthday.
What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles?
The climate, the people and the opportunity.
