LA500 2024: Martin Jarmond

Director of Athletics, UCLA

Jarmond took over as the ninth director of athletics at UCLA in 2020, making him the first African-American at the role at the school. He worked to move the school out of the Pac-12 and into the Big Ten Conference. USC is moving to the Big Ten Conference as well. In his first few years at the job UCLA won three NCAA championships for men’s water polo in 2020, women’s soccer in 2022 and men’s volleyball in 2023. He also started a Voting Matters Initiative to aid student athletes and helped create a partnership between UCLA and Nike/Jordan Brand. Jarmond was previously Boston College’s Director of Athletics for three years. Before that he was the deputy director of athletics at Ohio State. Jarmond helped raise more than $120 million for the school between 2010-2012. He is a two-time recipient of Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 Award. Jarmond who is from North Carolina, was the captain of the University of North Carolina at Wilminton’s men’s basketball team for two years.
