What’s the best advice you ever got? I was greatly influenced by the suggestion to ‘open your mind to the possibility that the other person might be right.’ A variation of the theme, ‘There are lots of answers between A and Z.’ So when reviewing a draft provision or contract, I consider whether the way I had drafted is substantively different than the other version and whether it’s worth making the change. When negotiating, I consider whether there’s a solution other than the polar A or Z alternatives. And in general, opening ourselves to civil discourse especially when we disagree with each other potentially leads to more agreement between people. Our politicians would be well advised to adopt this approach.

What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category? “All the President’s Men.” It’s a cautionary tale.

What’s at the top of your bucket list? A safari in Africa. What was your first car? Nissan 240SX.

Like to have it back? No thanks. I prefer my Mercedes.

What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles? The weather. It sounds superficial, but sunny days and blue skies lift your spirits. ‘Chance of rain’ is bad weather in L.A., and your worst day in L.A. is a better day than any other place.
