Belldegrun, an Israeli-born surgeon, scientist and entrepreneur, founded cancer immunotherapy company Kite Pharma, which he sold to Gilead Sciences in 2017 for $11.9 billion. He funded and built several other biotech companies, including Cougar Biotechnology, Agensys and Allogene Therapeutics. Belldegrun used the proceeds from the Kite Pharma sale to set up Century City-based Bellco Capital, which serves as a hub for life science ventures. Most recently, Belldegrun emerged as one of the co-founders of the newly established California Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy at UCLA, which will be housed at the former Westside Pavilion shopping center.
