LA500 2024: Tricia Esser

Chief Executive, KTGY

Esser assumed the role of chief executive of KTGY in 2006. KTGY has six offices around the nation with a combined staff of more than 400. Locally, the firm has specialized in designing affordable housing projects around downtown Los Angeles. Last year, the firm made waves with its proposal to build a series of 12-story modular towers to house the homeless population of Skid Row, just blocks away from the firm’s headquarters.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
“Don’t grow for the sake of the numbers, grow for the opportunities that growth creates for the entire team.” This advice has been critical; if it’s only about the numbers and the bottom line, we stop caring about design, the client, the team.

What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category?
“Signs” is by far my favorite movie. I love the jump scares; I’m not a super big horror or sci fi fan, but this movie was different, and creative and the characters are awesome.

What’s at the top of your bucket list?
I’ve decided creating a bucket list might make me say “no” to something that comes along, so instead, no list. This way I will hopefully say “yes” to something fun that comes my way. Last year I went to Iceland, so fun, but never on a list, I’m so glad we said yes, the country is beautiful!

What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles?
Easy answer – the weather and the beautiful beaches!
