LA500: Stephen Cheung

Chief Executive, President Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., World Trade Center Los Angeles

Cheung was appointed chief executive and president of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. last year after serving as executive president and later chief operating officer. In his role, Cheung leads a team that drives key economic development programs such as research, business assistance, industry-cluster development, workforce development and international trade. In addition to his work at the LAEDC, he has concurrently served as president of World Trade Center Los Angeles since 2014. Cheung’s board appointments include the L.A. County Workforce Development board, L.A. Tourism and Convention Board, Sister Cities of Los Angeles, UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs and Mayor Karen Bass’ Small Business Cabinet.

What’s the best advice you ever got? Not all questions are meant to be answered. Sometimes, it is more pertinent to allow a question to marinate. What’s your favorite movie, all time and in any category? Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece from the 1980s, “Castle in the Sky.”

What’s at the top of your bucket list? Taking six months to through-hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada.

What was your first car? Jeep Wrangler.

Would you like to have it back? Yes, once they had it in an all-electric option. I would love to take it on a camping trip.

What’s the best thing about living in Los Angeles? Ability to taste the best authentic cuisines from around the world, all within an hour drive (20 minutes on a good day).
