Riley has led the financial services firm B. Riley Financial as co-chief executive since 2018. The publicly traded company is a boutique stock-picking firm focused on smaller companies. B. Riley reported $25.4 billion in assets under management at the end of last year, but also added posted yet another year operating at a net loss. In its fiscal earnings for last year, the firm reported a net loss of $86 million. It’s known for offering a birth-to-death business model for small cap stocks and bonds. Its specialty is turnarounds, restructurings, bankruptcies and retail liquidations, including for big chains such as J.C. Penney, Toys ‘R’ Us and Bed, Bath and Beyond. As of last year, the firm’s analysts cover more than 400 companies, and its wealth management business oversees more than $24 billion of client assets. About a third of its holdings are in private equity. In addition to running the financial services firm, Riley is also chair of B. Riley & Co., an investment bank he founded in 1997 alongside Tom Kelleher.
