EVgo Speeds Upgrades to Its Stations

Sawtelle-based EVgo is speeding up its upgrades to electric vehicle charging stations.

Moving to keep up with rapidly advancing technologies for electric vehicle charging stations, Sawtelle-based EVgo Inc. recently announced plans to install about 500 connectors that enable the fastest currently available charging technology in a wider range of vehicles.

These connectors adhere to the latest North American Charging Standard for electric vehicle charging stations. They allow for charging of Tesla electric vehicles and other brands without the need for adapters.

The company notes that 80% of electric vehicles sold are expected to comply with the NACS by 2030.

Expanding NACS network

Until the Jan. 27 announcement, EVgo said it had installed about 100 of the NACS-compatible connectors across 22 major metro areas. Under this latest push, which the company said it expects to complete by the end of this year, the deployment of NACS-compatible connectors will rise in locations such as Austin (Texas), Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit and San Francisco.

According to the EVgo announcement, most sites will feature two to four NACS connectors with flexibility to expand as demand grows.

“Increasing the share of NACS connectors on EVgo’s high-power network means more EV drivers will have access to public fast charging near their everyday amenities like grocery stores, shopping and restaurants,” Badar Khan, EVgo’s chief executive, said.
