Sawtelle-based electric vehicle charging company EVgo Inc. recently announced the opening of a fast-charging station in Baldwin Park, one of two stations that are the result of an agreement with Plano, Texas-based Toyota Motor North America Inc.
The Baldwin Park station, which opened on March 11, has stalls to charge up to eight vehicles simultaneously with 350-kilowatt fast-chargers that are capable of bringing an electric vehicle battery up to 80% charge in as little as 15 minutes. The other station that is part of the Toyota agreement is in Sacramento. Both of these stations are co-branded with EVgo and Toyota.
“Collaboration with automakers has been core to our expansion over the last several years, and EVgo is grateful for the continued support from Toyota,” Scott Levitan, EVgo’s executive vice president of growth, said in the joint EVgo and Toyota announcement.
Charging in short time periods
A spokeswoman for the company said that at this point, about half of all the chargers in EVgo’s network are the high-powered 350-kilowatt version, matching the energy output of Tesla Inc. superchargers. These chargers can bring a battery up to 80% charge in 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the vehicle’s size and battery charging capacity.
While the stations were built in collaboration with Toyota and are co-branded, they are part of EVgo’s owned and operated charging network. There are no additional stations planned through the Toyota collaboration.
That partnership is part of Toyota’s Empact vision that aims to increase charger availability in underserved communities.
EVgo has an agreement with Toyota allowing drivers to locate EVgo charging stations through their Toyota apps.
