Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Aug. 1 nominated prominent attorney, lobbyist and businesswoman Cynthia McClain-Hill to the board of Water and Power Commissioners.

McClain-Hill, who has served on the city Police Commission since mid-2016, is co-founder of Strategic Council, a downtown law and lobbying firm. She has been a fixture in the city’s civic landscape for nearly 30 years, serving on the board of the city’s former community redevelopment agency, the Los Angeles city Small and Local Business Advisory Commission, the Mayor’s Economic Advisory Council and several other local and state government bodies. She served as nationwide president of the National Association of Women Business Owners in 2008-09.

“Cynthia never stops fighting to move L.A. forward — and I know that she will bring those same values to the job of overseeing a DWP that powers our households, empowers ratepayers, and leads the charge toward a sustainable, clean energy future,” Garcetti said in a statement announcing her nomination.

Speaking of her appointment, McClain-Hill said that the “DWP plays a very important role in the everyday lives of Angelenos. I am thrilled to take on the challenge of helping to lead the Department into the future, protect the interests of ratepayers, and move forward on the goals of the mayor’s sustainable city plan.”

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is the largest municipal utility in the U.S. with more than 9,000 employees and a budget of more than $6 billion.

McClain-Hill’s nomination to the five-member DWP commission is subject to confirmation by the Los Angeles City Council.
