Two Local Airports Receive More Than $60M in Federal Infrastructure Funds

Two local airports – Los Angeles International and Hollywood Burbank – have received $31 million and $30 million, respectively, in federal infrastructure funds. The funds are from the $1 trillion federal infrastructure bill that was signed into law in late 2021.

The $31 million for LAX is earmarked for the terminal roadways project that’s part of the $5.5 billion ground access overhaul now well under way. Other components of that overhaul include a $2 billion automated people mover project nearing completion and a $1 billion consolidated car rental facility that is built and has been turned over to rental car operators for final interior configuration work.

The federal dollars, announced last month by the Federal Aviation Administration, will fund a portion of the redesign of the roadway system serving all the existing and proposed terminals at LAX. They follow on a previous $50 million round of funding awarded last summer.

“This second round of funding demonstrates the commitment shared by the Biden-Harris Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, and Los Angeles World Airports in ushering in a new era at LAX,” said Justin Erbacci, chief executive of Los Angeles World Airports, the city agency that runs LAX.

Meanwhile, the $30 million awarded to Hollywood Burbank Airport will go toward the design and construction of a new 355,000-square-foot, 14-gate terminal building to replace the existing facility that dates back to the early 1930s. Burbank voters approved the new terminal in a 2016 referendum.

In December, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Commission awarded the contract for its terminal to a joint venture group. The team includes Pasadena-based Pankow Builders, Inglewood-based TEC Constructors & Engineers and Atlanta-based firm Holder Construction.
