Elysian Park-based civil engineering and construction management firm Cordoba Corp. has received a private investment from New York-based VSS Capital Partners.
The undisclosed investment amount, which VSS Capital announced earlier this month, is aimed at helping Cordoba expand. One of VSS Capital’s specialties is investing in founder-led companies. Cordoba was founded in 1983 by George Pla, who still serves as the company’s chief executive.
Since its founding more than four decades ago, Cordoba has worked on capital improvement projects in both the public and private sectors with a total project value exceeding $250 billion, the company said.
It’s known for having worked on several transit projects for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or Metro. Currently, it’s providing engineering services for Metro’s Eastside Transit Corridor, a 9-mile project to extend the Metro rail system east to Whittier. The first 4.7-mile segment to Montebello – most of which is planned for underground rail – is projected to cost roughly $7.9 billion.
‘Accelerate our growth’
Cordoba also has provided project engineering and construction management expertise for the Long Beach Community College District for more than 18 years.
“We set out to find a minority investment partner that would provide the capital to accelerate our growth while reinforcing – not redefining – who we are,” Pla said in a statement. “VSS shares our belief that Cordoba’s next chapter is about deepening what we already do exceptionally well and affirming the values that have guided us from the beginning. Together, we look forward to empowering Pacific Coast communities as they meet their facilities, energy, transportation and water infrastructure needs.”
Chicago-based Cabrera Capital Markets served as financial adviser for Cordoba on the transaction and Cincinnati-based FBT Gibbons served as legal counsel.
