HNTB has successfully concluded the second year of its SPARK LA program at Lennox Academy in Inglewood, inspiring the next generation of engineers through hands-on learning & real-world applications. A record-breaking class of 62 students participated in six weeks of interactive activities covering key topics in engineering & transportation.
“The successful SPARK LA program is providing students with a unique opportunity to ignite curiosity & inspire passion for engineering & transportation,” said Yoga Chandran, PhD, PE, GE, HNTB L.A. office leader & SVP. “Engaging young minds fosters creativity, problem-solving, & teamwork, leaving a lasting impact & equipping students with confidence for future success.”
SPARK LA 2024 featured HNTB experts: Mydria Clark (Equity & Community Engagement), Tony Fermelia & Nathan Vardas (Aviation), Karim Eldomiaty (Cost & Schedule), Cecilia Vong (Roadways), Amjad Hussain (High-Speed Rail), and Michael Torsiello & Martin Ellwood (Tunnels). Students began by designing community centers, fostering teamwork, creativity, & presentation skills.
“Through hands-on activities, students explored engineering concepts such as aviation infrastructure, the effects of alignment on ‘train wheels’ & superelevation, and the relationship between horizontal & vertical alignments in plan, profile, & section views,” said Tony Fermelia, HNTB VP. “They also learned about the importance of scope, schedule, & budget in project management to ensure successful project delivery.”
HNTB’s collaboration with dedicated volunteers & industry experts ensures each program is an unforgettable experience for students. The SPARK LA program is offered at three Los Angeles schools, reinforcing HNTB’s commitment to empowering communities & nurturing young talent to shape the future of engineering & transportation.
